Color Studio Journey
The Project
eSalon is a beauty tech company that formulates custom hair color for it’s clients and ships it to their home. eSalon wanted to create an in-person salon experience, the Color Studio, where new and existing clients could book appointments to have a consultation and hair color application with a staff colorist.
My Role
I collaborated with the salon, product, and tech teams to define the overall Color Studio journey and designed both the user-facing appointment booking tool and the interface for the machine that dispensed the hair color.
Appointment Booking
The Project
eSalon opened it’s Color Studio to the public in 2017 and we needed to build an appointment booking system to support it. There are many 3rd party solutions that we could have used, but we found many of them bloated in their feature set making them awkward to use for a single purpose. We also needed the system to support some of the unique features of eSalon, such as understanding if the user was a new or existing client, and have it hook in with our proprietary client management system.
Approach
I created a single page booking experience designed to scale as the number of services and locations grow over time. A single page approach made sense for the business so we could run ads for the studios in multiple locations but still point to the same url. We also found that it helps lend legitimacy to the business and brand if we show multiple locations and not just the location nearest you. We live A/B tested multiple variations and what you see here the desktop version of the winner after a few iterations.
Studio Color Formulation
The Project
eSalon needed a solution to dispense custom hair color in a retail environment. It was a web served experience displayed on an iPad mounted on a physical color dispenser. With the aid of a colorist, clients would have color created for them on the spot. The colorists would use this tool to craft and dispense the color.
Approach
I created a flow that is a combination of the client-facing hair profile and the colorist-facing client management system. It was an interesting design challenge to take on. Colorist and client first step through the hair profile, the colorist then reviews the formula, creates the client’s profile, and dispenses color. See select screens below from the experience.
